Palfinger UK Apprentices Gain International Experience in Austria
20th August 2025

Over the past year, two of our apprentices, Connor Anderson and Evan Pickard, have been seizing a unique opportunity to train at Palfinger’s global headquarters in Lengau, Austria.
Since September 2024, Connor and Evan have each travelled to Lengau five times, spending two weeks at a time learning directly from Palfinger’s expert training team. In July, they successfully completed the first phase of the Palfinger Dealer Apprentice Training programme.
Hands-on technical training
While in Austria, the apprentices covered a wide range of technical skills, including:
- Mag welding
- Crane mechanics
- Pneumatics
- Hydraulics
- Crane electrics
The training was designed to provide a strong balance of theory and practical application. Tutors Sebastian and Günter guided the apprentices through each module, ensuring they not only learned the “how” but also the “why” behind each system.
“We spent time learning and understanding how the cranes are made, wired and welded so the Palfinger product retains its well-known standard of quality. The mix of theory and practical made the course more enjoyable and easier to understand.” – Evan
“We learned about the process of manufacturing the cranes and gained a better understanding of the components and systems. I’ve been able to transfer this knowledge straight into my daily work.” – Connor
More than just technical skills
For both apprentices, the experience was about much more than just technical training. Spending extended periods away from home gave them the chance to grow personally as well as professionally.
“The whole experience was very beneficial not only to my work but also a great opportunity to learn new life skills being away from home.” – Evan
“Travelling away has improved my confidence to work independently and provided me with valuable life experience.” – Connor
A memorable highlight
During one of their visits, Connor and Evan also had the chance to meet footballer Kemar Roofe – a special moment for the two apprentices, who are both passionate Leeds United supporters.
Thank you to Palfinger Austria
We would like to say a huge thank you to Palfinger AG and in particular Bernard Eicher, Director of Apprentice Development and Training, for making this opportunity possible and for the continued support of our apprentices.
They were supported every step of the way by brilliant tutors Sebastian and Günter, making the learning both practical and enjoyable. This training has given Connor and Evan not only the technical skills to take their careers forward, but also invaluable personal experiences that will stay with them for life. Also a big thank you to Nadine Plainer for organising all the logistics.
Well done to both – we’re proud of what you’ve achieved so far and excited to see what comes next in your journey with Palfinger UK.
